KM038 | Roberto Clementi – Diodes
After an acclaimed album on Soma and two releases on Echocord Colour, it’s time for Italian producer and sound designer Roberto Clementi to join the Kontra-Musik family. With that kind of discography, you’d expect dub and lot’s of it, but this in not your average dub techno record. With the use of tape and field recordings and an array of analogue machinery Roberto Clementi has created what we would like to call an ”All nighter” for Kontra-Musik.
This is how it goes:
You arrive at the club. It’s dark, smoky and the crowd has already started to let go. The steady thumps of Diodes hits you like carts of a freight train. Waves of growling dubs are rolling over the floor and the hihats are piercing through the haze. Your body starts to move, almost subconsciously. It wants to belong to the other bodies, as a body of One. And you let it.
You’re into it now. So into it you hardly notice the shift in tempo, but you can feel the energy rising inside and around you. The track playing has that proper analogue grit and amplitude. For a second you think of Octave One’s Eniac, the blue techno classic, but this has more pace and peak time purpose. It’s The Optimist and sure enough, you smile blissfully as you dance.
It’s getting late. Sweat is dripping from the ceiling and bodies are swaying in the dark. You wish for a breath of fresh air, and you get it instantly through the speakers. You close your eyes and breathe in 15 years later. A vision of newly washed white sheets flowing in the soft breeze on a sturdy metal clothesline comes to you. A refreshing mirage in a place like this, don’t you think?
Your feet are getting heavy now. The smoke is clearing and a single sunbeam has managed to peak into a poorly covered cellar window in the back. But you can’t leave. Not just yet. Into demands you to stay for just a little while longer: those long, dubby synth streaks keep your body loose while that open hihat whips the fatigue away. It’s a raw and hazy track and it keeps you moving to the very end.
As you stumble out in the bright morning light, your head will still be echoing with Roberto Clementi’s exquisite craftsmanship. From early to late, from late to early – Diodes is a round the clock musical treatment from Kontra-Musik.
